SILVERING is most important to barometer restoration not only because it makes the readings
easy to decipher but it protects the brass register plates from corrosion.
Here is a fairly detailed discussion of the process, along with before-and-after photos.

Case and all brass cleaned of corrosion and lacquered
Missing brass parts replaced cistern repaired
